Girl in a catsuit with a latex hood

BDSM play can be an incredibly exciting experience that can cause intense emotional tension, whether you are in a D/s relationship or not. Tight-fitting latex clothing restricts your movement and breathing, especially when combined with a ball gag. It is important to remember that although BDSM can be a fun activity, it also carries a significant amount of risk and danger. During BDSM activities, you can push yourself to the very edge of your physical and mental comfort, and while that may be part of the appeal, it is crucial to pay attention to the safety of everyone involved.

Although BDSM is a recreational activity, it still requires adhering to unwritten ethical and moral rules. In the workplace, you have probably encountered OHS (Occupational Health and Safety), but do you know the safety philosophies that apply to BDSM practices?

While some people prefer the traditional approach of SSC, which stands for Safe, Sane, and Consensual, others may identify more with different philosophies that better suit their needs. Regardless of which rules you decide to follow, it's important to understand their meaning and how they relate to you and your partners. Everyone should choose an approach that respects their style and personal philosophy of safety.

SSC

Safe, Sane, Consensual

SSC is a traditional and well-known approach that ensures safe and responsible practice of your BDSM activities. If SSC is important to you, you should consider:

  • Is the activity safe?
  • Is it reasonable to practice the activity objectively and subjectively with this partner?
  • Do we all understand what will happen and do we all agree to it?

It goes without saying that all partners must agree on what is considered safe and healthy. This approach works great if you and your partners are on the same wavelength, have similar views, and understand how the practice is applied. If this is not the case, misunderstandings can easily arise, so discuss and communicate things very transparently. If SSC rules do not seem like the right approach for you or are too vague or limiting, there are other options.

RACK

Risk-Aware Consensual Kink

RACK rules are the answer for those who find SSC too vague and confusing. Which definition of safe and healthy should be used? What if you know something is crazy, but you still consider it rational? Who decides in such a case? RACK offers a more specific framework for addressing these questions.

Risk-aware means that you are aware of the risks. However, it is still important to identify the risks and understand how to prevent them. Consensual is clear. All participants are in agreement with a specific BDSM activity. Kink then refers to a specific practice, act, power exchange, scene, or moment that relates to your play. If you want to apply RACK rules, ask yourself:

  • Can you identify the risks associated with the activity?
  • Do all participants agree with it?
  • Do you unquestionably understand what will happen?

PRICK

Personal Responsibility, Informed, Consensual Kink

It is another extension of the RACK rules. These rules are focused on the need to emphasize that all participants should take personal responsibility for what they do and what they undergo. Informed means that you fully understand what you are about to do, including any risks. If you have enough information and agree, it is your personal responsibility to participate. Here are some questions you should ask yourself:

  • Am I mentally capable of taking responsibility for what will happen?
  • Do I know exactly what and how things will happen - do I have enough information?
  • Do all participants agree with this?

Which set of rules is the right one for you is up to your decision. We believe that most people practicing BDSM have their own safety procedures well established, and whether you follow SSC, RACK, PRICK, or a mix of all mentioned, is up to you. Discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each set of rules is okay and even desirable, but remember that everyone should have the freedom to choose what works best for them.
